My First Solo Trip to Jamaica as a Woman in My 40s

When people ask me about my first international solo trip, I always tell them about Jamaica.

As a woman traveling alone in her 40s, safety is always on my mind. Before booking, I researched everything and talked to friends who had already visited. One of my coworkers loves traveling and assured me that Jamaica was a great destination if I stayed in the tourist areas.

That was enough for me.

I booked my stay in Montego Bay because it has an international airport. My logic was simple: if anything unexpected happened, I wanted to be close to the airport. That’s just how my brain works—I always think about the “what ifs.”

I also chose an all-inclusive resort because, honestly, I didn’t want the stress of figuring out meals or transportation during my birthday vacation.

Arrival in Jamaica

I flew from The Bahamas to Miami and then connected to Montego Bay on American Airlines. The flight was smooth, with a little turbulence, but nothing major.

Once I arrived, I had already arranged airport transportation to my hotel, the Hyatt Zilara Montego Bay.

The resort was beautiful.

My room was huge, with two queen beds, a separate shower, and a Jacuzzi tub. I loved the little personal touches, like seeing my name displayed on the TV screen when I walked in.

I immediately knew this birthday trip was going to be special.

Spa Day and Birthday Relaxation

The first thing I did was book my excursions.

I wanted to visit Dunn’s River Falls and go zip-lining.

Then I treated myself to a massage and pedicure because… it’s my birthday. Why not?

The spa was gorgeous.

I got a hot stone massage with aromatic oils and honestly fell asleep during the treatment. Afterward, I tried the sauna and even attempted the cold plunge.

Let’s just say the cold plunge and I are not friends.

I spent the rest of the evening sipping wine and relaxing.

Vacation mode activated.

The Birthday Disaster

The next morning was my birthday, and I was scheduled to visit Dunn’s River Falls.

Or so I thought.

I got dressed, found the pickup area, and waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Thirty minutes later, I discovered the tour bus had already left without me.

I was devastated.

I called my friend back home, who immediately told me to stop sulking and go get my birthday fixed.

Thankfully, the tour desk worked some magic.

They switched my excursions, moving Dunn’s River Falls to the next day and sending me zip-lining instead.

Birthday saved.

Zip-Lining Through the Jamaican Jungle

The drive was an adventure all by itself.

The winding mountain roads had me clutching my imaginary pearls more than once.

Once we arrived, at the Good Hope Estate, I was ready.

The zip-line course took us through the jungle, high above rivers and trees. Yes, there were mosquitoes. Yes, I swallowed a few bugs.

But once I was soaring over the rainforest, none of that mattered.

The views were incredible.

The rivers, mountains, and endless greenery felt almost unreal.

I’ve traveled quite a bit since then, but that zip-line experience remains one of the moments when I felt closest to nature—and closest to God.

There was something about floating through the trees that made me feel completely free.

Dunn’s River Falls

The next day was finally time for Dunn’s River Falls.

And it did not disappoint.

The first thing that struck me was the beauty of the place.

The ocean meets the waterfall in a way that feels almost impossible. It’s one of those places that reminds you just how amazing creation really is.

Of course, nobody warned me that climbing the falls would feel like a workout.

The water was freezing cold.

The rocks were slippery.

And we kept climbing.

And climbing.

And climbing.

At some point, I started wondering whether I had accidentally signed up for boot camp instead of a sightseeing tour.

But every step was worth it.

The scenery was breathtaking.

The Vendors Got Me

After finishing the falls, we had to walk through the local market.

Now, let me tell you something.

Do not make eye contact unless you’re ready to shop.

The vendors are incredibly friendly, and before I knew it, I had purchased several souvenirs I never planned on buying.

Every time I said I was done shopping, someone else would show me something I “absolutely needed.”

Meanwhile, my tour group had already escaped and was probably wondering if I’d been kidnapped.

Thankfully, I eventually made it back to the bus.

Resort Life

Back at the resort, the entertainment never stopped.

There were nightly shows, beach events, and plenty to do.

As a solo traveler, I mostly stuck to the buffet instead of making dinner reservations. Sitting alone never bothered me, but the buffet was easy and convenient.

My only complaint?

The food wasn’t spicy enough.

I came to Jamaica expecting bold flavors and serious heat.

I wanted spicy curry goat.

Spicy jerk chicken.

Spicy fish.

I wanted food that made me reach for a glass of water.

Instead, many dishes seemed toned down for international tourists.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, Jamaica was the perfect destination for my first solo international trip.

I felt safe.

I met friendly people.

The excursions were unforgettable.

The scenery was stunning.

And despite missing my tour bus on my birthday, everything worked out exactly the way it was supposed to.

Montego Bay gave me the confidence to continue traveling solo around the world.

Would I go back?

Absolutely.

In fact, next time I might stay in Negril.

But Jamaica will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the trip that showed me I could do this on my own.

Walking in the Footsteps of a Legend: My Visit to Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee

Some places you visit because they’re beautiful.

Some places you visit because they’re exciting.

And then there are places you visit because they are part of history.

That’s exactly how I felt when I visited Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee.

Now, I’ll be honest. Before this trip, I knew who Elvis Presley was. Of course I did. Everybody knows Elvis. But I wasn’t one of those people who knew every song, every movie, or every detail of his life.

What I discovered during my visit was that Graceland isn’t just a house.

It’s a story.

And for a few hours, I got to step inside it.

Arriving at Graceland

The moment I arrived, I could feel the excitement.

People from all over the world were there.

Young people.

Older people.

Families.

Couples.

Solo travelers like me.

Everyone had come to see the home of the King of Rock and Roll.

As I walked toward the entrance, I couldn’t help but think about how one man from a humble background became one of the most famous entertainers in history.

That’s the kind of thing that inspires me.

Because no matter where you start in life, your dreams can take you somewhere extraordinary.

Stepping Inside Elvis’s World

Walking through the front doors of Graceland felt like stepping back in time.

The house isn’t a massive mansion by today’s celebrity standards.

In fact, that’s one of the things that surprised me.

It felt personal.

Comfortable.

Like a home.

As I moved from room to room, I found myself imagining what life must have been like there.

The living room.

The dining room.

The famous Jungle Room with its unique décor.

Every space seemed frozen in time.

And somehow, that made it even more fascinating.

You realize very quickly that Graceland isn’t trying to impress people with luxury.

It’s showing you a glimpse of the person behind the fame.

The Cars, The Costumes, and The Memories

One of my favorite parts of the experience was seeing Elvis’s collection of cars.

Now listen.

Even if you’re not a car person, these vehicles are impressive.

The colors.

The designs.

The attention to detail.

They looked like works of art.

I also loved seeing the jumpsuits.

Pictures really don’t prepare you for how detailed they are in person.

The rhinestones.

The embroidery.

The craftsmanship.

Standing there looking at those outfits, I could almost picture the crowds screaming as Elvis took the stage.

It reminded me that before social media, before influencers, before viral videos, there was Elvis.

And he captivated the world.

The Emotional Side of Graceland

What surprised me most wasn’t the house or the exhibits.

It was the emotion.

As I walked through the property, I found myself thinking about success.

What it means.

What it costs.

And how quickly life can change.

Elvis achieved a level of fame that most people can only imagine.

Yet Graceland also tells a very human story.

Dreams.

Pressure.

Love.

By the time I reached the Meditation Garden, where Elvis and members of his family are laid to rest, the atmosphere became very quiet and reflective.

People weren’t talking much.

They were simply taking it all in.

And honestly, so was I.

More Than a Tourist Attraction

What I expected was a celebrity home tour.

What I got was a history lesson.

A music lesson.

And a reminder that behind every icon is a real person.

That’s what made Graceland special for me.

You don’t have to be the biggest Elvis fan in the world to appreciate it.

You simply have to appreciate stories.

Because Graceland is full of them.

As a solo traveler, I love experiences that teach me something new about a place, its people, and its culture.

Graceland did exactly that.

I left with a deeper appreciation for Elvis Presley, for Memphis, and for the impact one person can have on the world.

Would I recommend visiting?

Absolutely.

Whether you’re a lifelong Elvis fan or someone who’s simply curious about one of America’s most famous cultural icons, Graceland is worth the trip.

And as I walked away from those famous gates, I couldn’t help but smile.

For a few hours, I had walked through history.

And that’s one of the best parts of travel.
